Dorotea “Dorothy” Romero Lopez was welcomed into Heaven on Wednesday, October 17, 2018. Dorothy was born in Ballinger, Texas, on October 1, 1945. In April 1966, she married Lupe Lopez. They raised a beautiful family as they shared 40 years of life, love, and memories.
Dorothy’s motherly love extended far beyond that of her own family. For 25 years, Dorothy served the school children in Arnett Benson as the cook at Tubbs Elementary. One of her greatest legacies, of which she expected no praise, was using her own money to pay for the meals of children who otherwise would have gone without a meal – An act which she considered a privilege. After her beloved husband’s passing, Dorothy retired from cooking but not from serving others. She welcomed new generations into her loving heart and continued ministering to everyone she met through friendship and prayer.
One of the greatest highlights of Dorothy’s life was a surprise trip to one of the wonders of our world: The Grand Canyon. While she had never been on an airplane, Dorothy overcame the fears of a first-time flyer and allowed the natural beauty of this world to fill her heart and replenish her soul.
Above all, Dorothy was a faithful and selfless servant of God. When a friend would leave her house saying they’ll see her again soon, Dorothy would always reply, “God willing.” When a child would kiss her goodnight saying they’ll see her in the morning, Dorothy replied, “God willing.” When her family and friends needed comfort and reassurance, Dorothy reminded us that all things are possible – God willing. “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your master” – Matthew 25:21.
While her time with us has ended, Dorothy’s legacy of service and love remains strong in the hearts of those who knew her best. Dorothy is survived by her daughters Nancy Lopez and husband John, Corinna Hood and husband Nathan, and son Oscar Lopez and wife Sandra, grandchildren Chris Compton and wife April, Adam Compton, Bryan Munoz, Allison Munoz, Stephanie Munoz, and Izaiah Lopez, and great-grandchildren Angela, Ben, Bethany, Brayleigh, Brielle, Claudia, Damia, Kamiya, Lilly, Jaelynn, and Seth. Dorothy is also survived by her two brothers, Patricio Luera and Carlos Luera.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lupe, daughter Sylvia, son Lupe, Jr., grandson Benny, and brother Johnny.
